5 Advanced Rules of Composition

Updated: Dec 29, 2018

We covered the 5 Basic Rules of Composition (Golden Ratio, Centered Composition and Symmetry, Camera Angle, Leading Lines & Framing) in a separate forum post.

As we mentioned then as well, there are no unbreakable rules when it comes to how you should compose your photos. These are rather techniques or guidelines that you can use.

There are a number of established composition techniques which can be applied in almost any situation to enhance the impact of your capture. Composition refers to the way the various elements in a scene are arranged within the frame.

Many of these guidelines and terms have been used in art to help achieve more attractive compositions. When getting ready to capture a photo, try to decide in your mind which one (or more than one) of these guidelines you are going to follow.

Following you will find a list of 5 composition techniques.

1. Foreground interest and creating depth

7. Shot Types/Distance of the main subject from camera

8. Negative space

9. Isolating your subject/blurring the background

10. Color combinations

Digital photography allows us to capture the same scene with different compositions until we find the perfect one for the scene.

Enjoy and experiment!
